2011, Barcelona, were the tangy year and place of my Acid Break sonic explorations. LEMONDANCE, as the name suggests, aimed to be the soundtrack for a lemony cocktail time with "papatas bravas" before hitting the town. This was a journey of relentless partying until dawn, and Barcelona, for myself and many of my friends, offered little else.
LEMONDANCE had this simple leitmotif: synthetic riffs, a slightly saturated square wave with dripping slide accents, rumbling bass, and funky stabs JUNO 60 like screeching in the hyper highs. All this, crafted from a laptop, a handful of freeware, and a CRUMAR BIT99, vintage iconic synth from "ItaloDisco" movement.
The result? The "Poor man's dance" music! A chaotic electro EP with the aesthetic of a candy-coated video game, a post-rave recipe of retro "webmusic" or a sonic illustration for an "acid smiley" electro meme ?? Nobody knew what it was...
From impromptu rooftop parties to post-industrial clubs and "after" venues like Porto Hurraco, this record truly lived only during those few live performances. I even recall playing my gear on a chipboard placed over a supermarket trolley due to the lack of space on stage (thanks to all the DJs). When you're part of a so-called alternative punky, freaky, narco-tourist network on the edge of legality, you learn to adapt.
My life has changed significantly since then, but I still cherish the fantasy, humor, self-parody, and sheer energy of that era. Restored here in its raw form, this EP reflected my temporary abandonment of "serious" music making in favor of a more festive, euphoric gimmick. It was simply about fueling the dancefloor in my own shifted way. May some of you can still "smurf" along on it.
